Regional Dependence |
Regional Dependence is an experimental animation that is constructed from scanned tobacco leaves that were grown in Walker's native Southwestern Virginia. The leaves are cured and are manipulated to create a fantastical scene of machine-like movement and allusions to agricultural processes. Walker's animation shows the seemingly cyclical nature of the tobacco industry in her region and also how it fails to come full circle. Tobacco is a difficult crop to grow and requires significant calendar time and many strenuous man-hours to produce a small profit. The crop requires a year round commitment as planting and setting are done in the spring and summer while harvesting, curing and taking the plants to market all occur in the fall and winter months. Walker's cyclical animation links the pattern of addiction with that of Appalachia's regional dependence on tobacco. This sequence implies that not only does tobacco harm those who use it but it also damages the regional economy as the tobacco is shipped to Richmond and Winston Salem for big business and the government to tax. |
