Holes
Digital Prints of Video Stills
16" x 20"
2006

In the Holes series, an anonymous yet distinctly feminine hand performs a masculine penetrative act. Slowly creeping into and probing the depths of everyday components of a desolate landscape - from drainage pipes to holes in walls - the disembodied arm performs a gender reversal that is revealed to be as absurd as it is temporarily empowering. Originally created as a digital video, the still photographs shown here chart the repeated - and repeatedly futile - efforts of the subject to gain access to spaces rendered mysterious by virtue of their inaccessibility alone. Ultimately, the gender reversal performed in this series accomplishes nothing and the assumptions of male and female difference that constitute the premise of the experiment are exposed to be artificial and overstated.
