Description by Karen Rapp, Stanford University

eScapes: Technology Landscapes is a series of digital photography and video works that reference the way technology has taken root in the contemporary landscape. While these images of computer monitors, electrical cords and compact discs seem foreign - even jarring - in the natural settings in which Walker has placed them, her workanticipates a future in which the boundaries between natural and artificial may not always be as clearly defined. The ambiguous title of the series - which alternatively reads as e-scapes (as in electronic landscapes) and "escapes".   This suggests the possibility of multiple readings: are these technological interventions altering our experience of space both virtual and real, or is the technology here to be understood as escaping - literally running away from - the virtual world into a natural landscape fundamentally distinct from it?
